Here is my story:
Nebraska USA: Stacie J. Eilers I have AS. It was around 8 years for me to be officially diagnosed after my symptoms became evident. I had a very challenging pregnancy (after being told I could not have a child). Amazing doctors helped my son arrive but 3 months early. I would not change that but the focus was always on the baby and not very directly on my health. After my son was born I was adjusting to being a new mom but was also adjusting to having the symptoms of AS and not knowing that is what it was. I went through a string of doctors and mis-treatments and diagnoses and was emotionally devastating. I continue to struggle a lot with emotions as I have learned they cause a lot of my symptoms. I never realized before this disease how greatly emotions are tied to your health.

After 6 years of always feeling like there was something not right with me after the pregnancy, I asked my physician if that was going to be the way I felt for the rest of my life. Thank goodness he said he would tell me when we were there and that was not it or I would have given up at the age of 30. I found a rheumatologist who believed in me and that it was not just in my head. She treated me outside of the box most physicians put patients into. I found an amazing physical therapist I have been working with the last couple of years to regain my strength I lost while waiting for a treatment. I make progress and then seem to always hit a road block for one reason or the other. I continue to keep fighting to break through as there are many more things I want out of this life. I have also began eating a Whole30/Keto type diet and it has made a world of difference. I have gone from not remembering when my last good day was to not remembering when my last flare was. I do have daily challenges but I am still able to work, drive and continue to keep fighting against this ugly disease.

Thank you for letting me share my story with you and finding the courage to share your stories and visions with others.

A story shared by a loving wife…..
My husband Donnie , is a fellow AS warrior who endures life everyday like many others on the face book n website page. He has always suffered from chronic back pain but for years worked hard to support his family, he is the father of twins Donnie ray n Danny ray. He also was a talented mma fighter preparing to go pro when AS took center stage in his life six years ago. There was a point when he lost full mobility but as the fighter he is he didn’t stay down for long. He has suffered complications such as developing seizures, and currently is working through some minor heart complication as well.
He struggles everyday with the fact he will never do mma again but his passion n drive remains strong. He became fully disabled a few years back but he will remain a hero in our eyes forever. He is hoping one day they will find a cure or a different treatment option other than biologics as he has bad side effects.
He is my inspiration n the light in my life, if I could trade places with him I would in a heartbeat!

A.S. Face 0510: Nadean Amen

My name is Nadean Amen I am 49 years old  I live in Lincoln Nebraska. I have AS. I feel very alone with this disease. Would like to find a support group, but there aren’t any in my area that I can find. So, I found your site. I think it would be supportive to be in contact with others that have AS. I was not diagnosed until 2 years ago, but my Doctor thinks I have probably have had AS since I was 16 or 17 years old. I have a lot of pain all the time, it’s very hard to control. I have a fabulous Rheumatologist that has helped me a lot. I think what you are doing is Amazing to raise awareness for AS. Thank you very much!  Nadean Amen

I was so relieved when I finally got diagnosed in 2010!  I started having symptoms as early as 1997, but I chalked them up to sports injuries and a snowmobile wreck, and an uncomfortable desk chair.  I went to see chiropractors, and doctors that would do x-rays and do blood tests for rheumatoid arthritis but I never got any answers. By the time I could get into see a doc, my inflammation would be gone and I’d be moving around just fine. They didn’t seem to believe me that just days before, I was having to crawl on my knees just to get to the bathroom in the morning, or that I just couldn’t stand the excruciating pain of simply sitting at my desk. My worst pain always seemed to be in my lower back and my right hip. At one point I was prescribed 1600 mg of naproxen, which was like heaven!  This was of course before they found out how bad it was for your liver.  All those years I’d go for weeks or days walking around like I was 90 years old, then I’d wake up and be just fine again for a week or two or even a month if I was lucky.  While I was pregnant with my daughter in 2004, I had my first bout with iritis. It was excruciating! I couldn’t keep my left eye open, couldn’t be in the light at all and had to be driven to the eye doctor. I specifically asked him if there were other conditions, such as pregnancy, that would cause someone to get iritis. “Nope.”  He said, “Some people just get it.”   I got through the pregnancy and God blessed me with a few years of hardly any symptoms at all. I don’t know how I would have carried a baby around with the hip and back pain I’d had. I wouldn’t have been able to feed or bathe her on the days when I barely get off the floor.
It was also a blessing that I didn’t care for the original eye doctor I had gone to the first time.  When I felt myself getting iritis again in 2009, I made an appointment with a different eye doctor.   This wonderful man asked me during my exam if I ever had back or hip pain. I thought it was a strange question coming from an eye doctor, but I told him about my years long battle with chronic back and hip pain. He told me he wanted me to see a rheumatologist. I agreed and he sent me to my wonderful rheumatologist who finally convinced me that I am not crazy, I just have AS!  I wanted to kiss my eye doctor! What a relief to finally know what has been causing me so many crazy symptoms for so long.  I had come across AS once in 1999 while “googling” my symptoms, but at the time I couldn’t find much information and I forgot all about it.  Now I want people to know about it, and hear about it like you do MS and other autoimmune diseases. How many other people are out there thinking they are crazy hypochondriacs like I did for so long?  My rheumatologist specializes in AS because her father suffers from it, so she understands everything about it, almost as good as someone who has it.
I own a sign & screen printing business and I just helped with an MS fundraiser for a friend. I designed and printed some really cute t-shirts that say “MS is BS — Huntin’ for a Cure.”  It’s got me inspired to come up with a “AS is BS” design!  That will be my next project for sure!
Big hugs to all my fellow AS’ers!

I have been dealing with AS for many years now but just diagnosed two days ago. I feel better knowing what it is that is causing this pain, but still trying to understand why there isn’t anything to cure this yet. I sure hope there is someway that I can help spread the word of this disease
