This story is in both English and Spanish Esta historia es en Inglés y Español
TRANSLATION:
I´m 25 years old. To be honest.  I´d say that I have the typical pains of AS since I was born.
I was born with Congenital Dislocation of hip, decalcification, but thanks to my mother´s soon detection and my pediatrician I was treated. since I was a baby I had to use the frejika´s cushion. In my childhood the pain of my bones as I called them woldn´t yielded, then my family took me to the traumatologist again, but at the end he only prescribed  medication. When I was a teenage pain activated constantly specially in the winter season and when I was doing high impact exercises, every time the inconvenience was more and more not only my legs, but rheumatic pain, my hip, my arms, my hands, cramps, bruising, coming back to the traumatologist decided to make blood test for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, but were always negative my x-ray never showed nothing worried at the end they only said it was because I was growing. Eventually colitis, gastritis and probable endometriosis added.
I finished College got an Administration degree, married in October 2011, everything was going right about my personal goals, but it was not so in January  2012,  my back pain begun they came and went, in February 2012 I started with quotations  to different traumatologist in search of any reasons for my new pains, according with a MRI showed I had on my hip a left acetabulum with focal area of esclerosis and subchondral  erosion (because of the congenital dislocation) and the traumatologist said I had to go to a hip arthroscopy surgery pointing that my back and my legs´ pain will be gone. I was ready to the surgery, because I wanted to take the pain out, but…
In March 2012 paralyzing pain from coccyx to cervical arrived. I was hospitalized, internists, cardiologists and traumatologists again, rheumatologist they diagnosed… Lupus they prescribed Meticorten 20 mg every 6 hours, it was a bomb to my body! It was impossible for me to walk, to talk, even to breath and eat by myself; I got a depression because I didn´t know what was really happening to my body. I was hospitalized and diagnosed…Fibromyalgia, finally I got my appointment with a Rheumatologist at IMSS (Social Security System of Mexico), but was two months later, and when the day came, I was out from the hospital diagnosed with Undifferentiated Somatoform Disorder and a new appointment with Psychiatrist this time.
I had to believe in me, I would never give up, it would never overthrow me, thanks to my Mom that´s is in heaven enlighten me and I never stop insisting several quotations to Rheumatologists, I investigate my symptoms, asked for opinions, then in November 2012 several attempts after, diagnosis came AS and Ulcerative Colitis. The result never alarmed me, what I always wanted was a name for my pains. Thanks to my family ( my father, husband, sisters and friends ) to my Mother and God, I´m alive and desires to live, undertaking new business, dreams and goals.
We are only passengers in this life, never let happiness be our destiny only transport to live.

A.S. Face 1187: Miguel

Face 1187
My name is Miguel, I’m 33, Portuguese and right now living in Mexico. I suffer of low back pain since I’m 15.  Some nights I really couldn’t sleep since after 2 hrs laying down I felt a desperate intense hard back lower pain. Only solution was to wake up, walk around my place, hot shower, sleep on my knees, among others.
My father had the same problem since he’s 20′s. During the last 40 years he went to so many different specialists & orthopedists all over the world, he did 5 different surgeries, treatments, physical therapies, acupuncture and so many other things I really can’t recall. Approximately 2 years ago a friend sent him to a rheumatologist and AS was (finally) diagnosed.
After a couple of nights investigating online I decided to go to a Rheumatologist and for my surprise I was also diagnosed with AS! For the last 2 years I have been taking “Sulfasalazine” on a daily basis and my pain is mostly controlled. I have a max of 5 bad days per month. Fortunately I don’t have any other symptom apart of Temporomandibular joint pain.
I used to do a lot of sport when younger but now I’m just doing some light exercises at home.
To all AS sufferers I wish you all the best, hopefully this disease will be recognized by millions and not only by the people who carry it.
Thanks to my father I was diagnosed… Thank you dad!
Stay healthy!!!

As the stories begin with a once upon a time …
I always considered myself a healthy person, at 6 years old I had a tonsils surgery after gallbladder and at 42 years occasionally I was sick flu or throat, nothing strange
From a young age I was diagnosed with PCOS and after 6 years of therapy I finally got pregnant through artificial insemination, I have a child of nine years and consider it a great gift and a wonderful achievement.
In December 2012 I started with symptoms of headache and chronic fatigue, my first visit to the family doctor diagnosed a flu, a few day and without change, continued malaise, chronic fatigue, stomach pain and headache ending vomiting, several emergency room visits in the clinic and the diagnosis was migraine or colitis.
January 10, 2013 with my family doctor again and request blood tests and symptoms ceased not, waiting the next day to realize analysis because it was not normal that trouble, I go home and in less than three hours the pain in arms, legs and neck, could not hold my head up and could not move my legs and arms, at that time I realized that something serious was happening to me as it was not possible recover with an aspirin, I went to the hospital and all blood tests without alteration, only low potassium, hospitalized for three days, take away my pain and diagnosed only low potassium. I prescribe vitamins and Norflex Plus for pain.
Back at home and unable to walk because every step was pain, I begin to have difficulty breathing and back to the hospital in a few minutes my face started to redden, began looking Lupus tests, diagnose allergic reaction to Norflex plus.
Weekend at home and severe joint pain, get up, walk, bathe, comb, take a pen it was pain, I visited the doctor and tells me, is a viral myositis, spend their days and inflammation of the joints do not lessen, depletion continued I could not leave the house, noting change and I back with the medical internist and I request a bone scan, diagnose Rheumatoid Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis correlate, I transferred to the rheumatologist.
March 22 in consultation with the rheumatologist, I requested blood analysis of ESR and C-Reactive Protein, HLA B27 and radiographs of the hip, I diagnosed Ankylosing Spondylitis and Sjogren’s syndrome, from that day changed my life completely, I’m medicated with sulfasalazine and arcoxia, pains in the joints and spine are diminished, my eyes dry now treated with the ophthalmologist today appreciate every step I take, I’m back to walking and climbing stairs, energy is back, I can now rewrite or pick up a pen, occasionally every 15 days I have an episode of intestinal inflammation is causing me headache and vomiting, at the time the joint pain increases, however I’m used to a certain level of pain I decided not to take analgesics while still can with this pain, I modified my diet and avoid flour, cereals and now probiotics omeprazole and join me in my day to day, I read about this disease and in my case the HLA B27 was negative, is the first outbreak and considering that this age has been to want to think that I can control the EA before it controls me, my sense of humor keeps me positive and my faith in God keeps me walking forward.

Hi everybody, my name is Bertha Edith, but my friends call me Betty. I am from Ciudad Jiménez Chihuahua, México, I am 36 years old and I have AS. I remember my first symptoms were when I was around 16, I started with pain in my hip occasionally. I  used to do lots of activities, I liked to dance, to play softball, basketball, until after my graduation from High School at the age of 18, I was really bad. I had pain in all my body, I was taken to doctor who prescribed me with some treatment, but Nothing cold calm down my horrible pain I felt. He told me to visit a rheumatoligist because He supposed I had juvenile Arthritis. So I had to leave my city because in the city I was living then, There was no rheumatoligist. I went to Torreón, Coahuila, because my oldest sister lives there, she took me with several doctors who told me to have some studies done and x-rays until a rheumatologist diagnosed me with AS. It was really hard for me to know it because I could not understand what It was happening to me, after having been a really active person, I started being a person who was not be able to do any physical activity any more, just walking and swimming, that is the thing I was told by the doctor.  I had to stay to live with my sister because I had to be checked by the doctor every week or every 15 days and after that every moth. I could not stand cold days in the city where I live nowadays, so I decided to live with my sister and of course, I missed my mom too much. Well, I lived in Torreón for about a year and suddenly, I decided to go back to my city, my lovely Jiménez because Ifelt really bad, I did not want to go out anywhere, my friends used to do their best to support me and I started feeling worst emotionally. Finally, my friends convinced me to go out with them and go dancing, little by little I continued to live a “normal” life again. Some time later, I met the one who is now my husband Luis, and thanks to him I started living again. I started again to do sports, I played soccer, I was in little pain. After two years and a half, We decided to get married and we now have a couple of kids, a 11-year-old boy and a 9-year-old-girl, the ones who I love with all my heart. I was several years under check until I played softball again which is a sport that I love. I began to study again, now I am an expert in beauty. One day, around 3 years ago, my daughter hit me with her elbow unintentionally in my hip, and I started being in pain again so bad, and I had to stop playing softball. I cannot be standing up for a long time, Obviously I cannot in the profession I studied, I had to change my plans and I do not know when I could get back in order to run my beauty parlor. I was really bad psicologically, I did not want to go out and I felt really bad to see my kids doing the housework. Thank God I found a facebook group with friends, all of them with AS and they support me so as to continue with my life because I have been always criticized by people who do not believe how sick I am, but now I feel strong and brave to defend myself from the people. My family´s support and my husband’s has been really important to me. Now I am trying to get a better treatment at IMSS because It took me lots of years without medical attention, I had just Darvon to stop pain and never wanted to send me to the rheumatologist. Nowadays I take 5 pills of sulphasalazine a day, a pill of Deflazacort, 2 pills of Gabapentinas, and probiotics. I am waiting to see if I am a candidate to get biologics. I pray to God to be like that.
Sincerely, your friend Betty.

Mi vida con AS
My Life with AS
Hi, I’m Issaias Arreguin from the Mexico City. In February of 2009 was when a strange and not normal pain began affecting my ankles and soles of the feet, I thought my job as a cook where I spend sometimes more than 8 hours of standing could be causing this trouble. The pain came and disappeared but equally, hurting a couple of days dragged on for weeks, to spend a few months note that the movement was quickly whipped pain legs now completely affected, though still blaming to the long hours and heavy work so I did not give it more importance and medical care, enough to stretch your legs and massage to relieve some of the pain and reduce swelling of the feet. So the months went to the point that the pain appeared more intense daily and accompanied by redness and increased temperature in the feet, I decided to self-medicate with 400 mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours as looking for some information on drugs to treat muscle aches and anti-inflammatory action and that the sale did not require medical prescription elects to start taking it and keep using it to feel a little better. September came and it was 400 mg of Ibuprofen every 3 hours he needed to try to support the work day and was more than accustomed to using the stick that four months ago helped me to stay on my feet, it was impossible to step the feet and dragged a result of the stiffness in her legs and trying to sleep became a nightmare, there were so many dawns that the pain was unbearable and I do not remember the exact times at home I said “do not cry, you us to go to the doctor? ” but I had the silly idea that would completely disappear the next morning. The weight loss, fatigue and pain were evident increasing the presence of a disease and still hoping to wake up one day without pain let a month pass without medical attention, but the day to move inside I did my room dragging my body on the floor and screaming take me to the doctor I regretted not going to the hospital eight months ago … Blood tests began, and were likely many final diagnoses given to me, to staph, ram cancaneo until kidney failure overwhelmed me so much and enters a terrible depression leading me absolutely not to trust any doctor. There was so much pain disability requesting it began to be a nuisance at work. The year 2010 came and with it the transfer to another hospital care specializing in rheumatology, the doctor begins with a physical examination and x-rays thoroughly revised and occasionally makes me any questions about the pain started or advanced, to hear my answers nods and searches clinical history to give you results comparing with each other … It took more than 15 minutes when I said “If … You Ankylosing Spondylitis” My face was of utter astonishment on hearing such a strange name and think it takes me 10 minutes to give me the diagnosis that other doctors tried to figure out in 3 months. Was inevitably ask me to repeat the name because it sounded so weird and unpleasant I thought I might die.
I always had the idea that most doctors are pretty straightforward and very cold to say things, and it really gave me the explanation I confirm that day more. “This is not going to kill you but one day you will stop walking” inevitably my eyes filled with tears, my dreams, plans and projects collapsed in seconds, remember that for more than three years is part of a theater company where everything was dancing , jump, run and stop just for the sake of my career was just beginning and it was devastating knowing that it should leave … A normal life of 19 years in seconds completely changed!!! Followed by the emotional shock some relief came as the doctor began by explaining how the process of AS and its treatment, repeatedly mentioned that it was not curable but could control it with an endless number of drugs and biological treatment. It was very hard to accept and believe mostly with the speed of the physician to make the diagnosis, I admit that I did not leave very satisfied or satisfied with the clinic. The incapacity lasted a month because of the type of work and the average situation that presented. Everything was so strange and alarming than coming home I started searching for information on the disease and everything related to it … As I read more I became convinced that the doctor was right and did not hesitate to start with NSAIMs medicate. I was sent to the laboratory for a Mantoux test and biological treatment can begin. Past 72 hours back to the doctor and authorize my biological treatment as the result of Mantoux was negative and could start my treatment with Infliximab, was a month taking indomethacin, sulfasalazine, paracetamola, folic acid and methotrexate and just noticed some improvement was previously the department where the biological and applied to get a sign on the door said “rheumatology department chemotherapy” Again the fear and sadness took over me and I thought “I’m really so sick” when entering smiling nurse told me “do not panic, that sign is too aggressive, but do not worry nothing’s wrong” I explained how the drug works and Full details and agree to use my first infusion. The day came and I still remember, spent about 3 hours and woke up a little sick but getting off the couch reposet could not believe … THE PAIN WAS GONE! To this day I still consider the Infliximab as a miracle of medicine, the following appointment was only to renew the inability for a month and collect more drugs. After 3 applications Infliximab again I felt like wearing coupled with almost 4 months resting. With 6 months of treatment and rest back to my old life, strong working hours, new features could do what I love in life … It has been 4 years of being in this battle, there have been many tears, many canceled commitments, but there are also many things that I have valued with this disease, and as I have given strong pain crises have also given me eager go ahead and strive to be a better person every day, we can not give to be stronger … NEVER LOSE FAITH !!!
I still have all the treatment, inflammation levels have declined considerably and therefore the same amount of drugs, I have had pain crisis but are too strong for short periods and are given every 6 months or so, yet I exercise stretching and walking to prevent the terrible back pain.
Thanks for the space and allowing me to be part of this project …

Hi! I’m Eduardo.
I have AS. This is my testimony: In 1983 when I was only 13 years old, I started to feel an awful backache and the orthopedist said I had a slipped disc (L5) “classic” in a wrong diagnostic of AS. The only option is surgery”, he said, but nothing changed pain was still there. 1986 surgery again, but this time I felt better I think it was because of the exercise that practiced and the bunch of pain killers prescribed. Finally the orthopedist said: I don’t know what happen to you and send me to the rheumatologist who said: You have AS and there is no cure. What? What is it? No cure? He started to explain: bla, bla, bla, I was not listening.  Was shocked; THERE IS NO CURE,GOD!. More medication and more bad news: In 10 or 15 years you could be on a wheel chair” somebody told me. I cried a lot, but I tried to have a normal” life only that there is nothing normal, never. Then when I was 27 could hardly move my left leg, my hip had fusioned. New surgery God was so painful! But the prostheses let me walk and hey! I don’t use a wheel chair. AS is a fight between my body and my spirit. And here I am. On March this year nephologist said that because of medication my kidney was exhausted(I don’t know how to explain it better) started with dialysis, but I feel positive and optimistic anyway, life continues with or without AS. Thank you for this great opportunity and God bless you. WE ALL ARE FIGHTERS! Guadalajara (west Mexico). My life with AS continued normal, productive and enjoyable. I HAVE A WONDERFUL WIFE that support me all these years, even when her family told her that she would be a nurse not a wife to me. Ah people!!!
My family support me in all kind of ways and I have three sons, one of them has been diagnosed with AS too, but  biological medication will make a big difference I hope.
I see a wonderful future. EVERYTHING WILL BE ALL RIGHT, WE ALL HAVE TO FIGHT put hard and soul AND NEVER GIVE UP!

A.S. Face 0542: Israel

Hi!!! I am Israel from Mexico city. I have AS

When I was a little boy, around six, a doctor told my mom I had rheumatic fever. He prescribed me a treatment based on Benzetacil 1’200.000 units. I remember it was really painful. After that, everything was alright.
When I was eleven years old, I was diagnosed with typhoid (fever). I was at home for some months because I had high fever and stomachache.
Talking to some doctors and rheumatologists, I was told AS started because of one of these illnesses. Never a firm result.
When I was seventeen, I carried a heavy bundle with sand and I felt how my back “cracked”. I visited the orthopedist. After some x-rays, I was told I had a slipped disc (L5). I took lots of pain killers, vitamins, I used to do specific exercises, but just for a year, that pain dissapeared.
After that year, I had backaches in the morning, but I thought the hernia started attacking me again :( I remember it was not every day, but I sometimes could not walk due to that pain. One day I decided not to take more medication, I was frustrated, I tried hot bags on my lower back, expensive pain killers, nothing worked.  Some months I had bad backaches, some others no pain.
I got better when I stopped playing basketball and did less exercise. I can remember two events when I really suffered. The first one was at 28, I returned to play basketball and one of those nights I woke up, sweating, crying… I could hardly move my leg. After some exercises prescribed by the orthopedist, I got better.
The second one was in March in 2011. I was playing video games with my nephew, It was kinect, I was “jumping”, lifting my legs”, that night, was one of the most painful in my whole life. It was the same pain, but ten thousand times more painful!
I visited the orthopedist, he told me I was young to have that kind of pain, I had some medical tests done and the news came after some days. (Israel, You have AS, You will not infect anybody, but You should visit a friend of mine, the rheumatologist).
I am not candidate to get biologicals, my mantoux test was positive (15mm). I do exercise and take sulphasalazine and indomethacin.
Thank you very much for the opportunity dear Cookie.
