A.S. Face 0220: Andrea Shelley
My name is Andrea Shelley from Bethpage, NY. I am a Registered Nurse, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a Spondylitis Warrior. My favorite prayer is the Serenity prayer. “God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Wisdom to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.” Each and everyday I say this prayer to myself, it helps get me in the mindset to conquer the rest of the day. I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis and Fibromyalgia a little over a year ago. Since then my world has been turned upside down, but I believe I have landed on top. I am no longer practicing Nursing, I am 26 years old, and receive social security disability. That statement now makes me proud rather than bring me down. I will take this opportunity to strengthen my soul, build up my courage for this battle, and still remember to retain the zest I have for life. AS has changed me, but it has made me a better person. I cannot deny that AS has taken so much from me, but I am adapting so that the new me can still be fulfilled. This life I live is a roller coaster of high highs, and really low lows. I am so lucky to have my loving husband, family, friends, and my little puppy that help keep me going everyday. Some of my favorite quotes include; Life is not about learning to survive the storm, but rather learning how to dance in the rain. True strength is keeping it together, when everyone expects you to fall apart. When something bad happens you have three choices. You can either let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you. Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ” I will try again tomorrow.”
