A.S. Face 1783: Tammy LaPlume

A.S. Face 1783: Tammy LaPlume

I’m 42 years old and was just diagnosed July 2013. for years I’ve had back problems and issues with my eyes flaring up. I was seeing doctor after doctor, chiropractors and physical therapists from time I was 15. They said I was just out of alignment and do these exercises.

I saw an optometrist for yet another flare in my eye in January 2009 in VT where the high was -3, 0 or 3. it was super cold. She told me it was an allergic reaction to a black fly bite…. in the dead of winter in January!? I got smart and went to an ophthalmologist who diagnosed me with epi scleritis. We moved back to NJ and I was just tired of hearing the same things and was hopeful for a new doctor. I saw a new primary who recommended that I see a rheumatologist, which I did. It just so happened there was an A.S clinical trial going on. The rheumy said I exhibited the symptoms and enrolled me in the trial. lo and behold, I finally had a diagnosis at the age of 39 and after 23+ years of suffering.

Now I’m on Remicade and so glad that I finally have a diagnosis and I know that I’m not crazy!
