A.S. Face 1293: Diana Zavala

My name is Diana Zavala I am 41 yrs. old and am a single mother of two wonderful teenage boys. I started having problems in 2008 and at the time I lived in Wisconsin and had a full time job. I was having aches and pains and some days I could barely get out of bed let alone walk. My doctor kept telling me that I had fibromyalgia and that I would be fine. I was sent to a pain management clinic and underwent so many procedures that were painful and in the end didn’t help. I lost my job in 2010 because I just couldn’t do it anymore, I worked as an unloader for a distribution center and did a lot of heavy lifting, and was on my feet for 10hrs every night, 4 nights a week. I just started getting worse with all the stress of not having a job and having to pay mortgage and bills. I ended up losing my home so I moved to Texas in 2012 to live with my parents. I didn’t get diagnosed with AS and tested positive for hlab27 until 2013, along with mixed connective tissue disease, iritis and other medical problems. I have always been a strong person but there are days that I don’t feel strong at all. I am glad I came across this on facebook and am able to read or comment on some of the posts. Now I know that I am not alone and feel that this group helps me move forward when I feel that I can’t do it anymore. My kids help and so do my parents but there are times when they make me feel as though I am just being lazy or overreacting. All I say to them is I just wish you understood and read about this illness. My youngest son has type 1 diabetes so he goes through rough days I just hope that some day they have a cure for his illness. Sometimes we just try to comfort each other, that’s all we can do. I am on treatments and hope that one day I can do the things that I used to do in the past as well as all the other people that suffer from AS. Smiling helps and humor even on the really bad days.
